During this time writing was influenced by the Puritans. Now the puritan lifestyle was very plain but very religious. They believed that the only source of truth that came from God was written in the Holy Book. The puritans were highly literate. Both men and women were required to be educated. Edward Taylor is one author from this time. Edward Taylor emigrated to America, and made a living as a teacher, minister, and physician. Because the Puritans were very religious Edward Taylor was influenced to write about sin. One of Edward Taylor’s most popular works is the Sermon of an Angry God. Edward Taylor used very descriptive examples to explain how we are damned by our sins and how strong and evident God’s wrath is. He used vivid and deep metaphors to draw readers attention to the real problem. The purpose of this piece was to show lukewarm Christians that they need to grow deeper into their faith and he did this to scare them into heaven.
