Dyker Heights was developed from a portion of woodland into a suburban community in 1895, and forms two and a quarter square mile rectangle, which is bounded by 65th Street, the Belt Parkway, 7th Avenues, and 14 Avenues. Since the community is most famous for its Christmas lights and decorations erected each year by its residents, it has been called " Dyker Lights."
Although It is unclear that in which December the tradition of Christmas lights start, most relevant newspapers, documentaries, and articles suggest it started sometime in the early to mid-1980s. At that time, most of the houses in Dyker Heights were inhabited by Italian-Americans. Therefore, in the beginning, the "Dyker Lights" was dominated by those Italian-Americans. …show more content…
In November, when people began to prepare the festival displays, many of these are utilized into holiday displays. At day time, all of displays and decorations in the dooryards provide a better street environment for both local residents, and passing visitors. At night, the colorful illumination highlights the display area with house owner's intention. When people walk on the street as a visitor in December, their eyes are often attracted by them which are all in front of the house's exterior along the street. And they would like to take out the cameras or phones to take pictures of it. cities like NYC, the nighttime lights are 20 to 50 percent brighter during Christmas and New Year Festival than the light output during the weekdays. Especially in most suburbs and outskirts of major cities like Dyker Heights, light intensity even increased by 30 to 50 percent. It means that electricity consumption in holidays is much more than peacetime. It also greatly increased the release of greenhouse gases. Moreover, the crazy electric consumption along with huge amounts of electricity bill will also aggravate resident's economic burden. Introducing renewable energy like solar panels into community becomes a good solution. Because like many renewable energy technologies, solar is highly regarded for its ability to produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gas. By generating home solar energy in day time, residents are reducing electricity demand on the utility, thus reducing their dependence on fossil
