40th Street Parklet Research Paper

The 40th Street Parklet was one of the first parklets created in Oakland. It was founded in 2012 as part of a pilot program to test the waters and see how the public would react before installing similar fixtures across the city. The outpouring of public support was phenomenal and the 40th street parklet passed the test with flying colors, gaining more than 400 likes on its Facebook page and receiving donations upwards of
$10,000 dollars towards its construction. Occupying a stretch of land that was once known for it’s desolate and empty storefronts, the parklet now receives a lot of foot traffic from bikers and pedestrians thanks to several relatively new businesses in the area, including Manifesto Bicyles, Subrosa
Coffee shop, and Homeroom,
