Does social class determine a child’s success? The first thing that can come to mind is, “No.” Some may think this because they believe that everyone is equal. However, is everyone really equal? Not really. It comes down to equity. If an upper class child and a lower class child were put next to each other, it is simple to point out who is who. Do they have the same opportunity to go to school? Yes. Does the upper class student and the lower class student go to the same school? No. The child who is in the higher class gets more opportunities. The upper class child goes to a better school and the lower class child might go to a school that doesn’t even have computers. What this all means, is that equity is what society needs not just equality.
