Eating disorders are prevalent in people of all ages, ethnic groups and races. In some cases eating disorders can began to be noticed on children while in other cases they can be notice in elders. In today's society people tend to get judge on appearances, particularly weight. The judgment that runs throughout the world is one of the many things that urges and pushes people to believe that they need to pursue an eating disorder to be what society thinks is beautiful and perfect. Women and teenagers often fall victim to an eating disorder due to insecurities. Many of the insecurities faced by women are due to media including but not limited to social media, magazines and movies. Daily a new perfect body is shown all over media and we as humans are expected to live up to what is considered perfect. Thus being said people will often see that they are not exactly what is considered perfect and begin to become uncomfortable with their own bodies. Along with environmental factors other factors including genetics and personality traits can play a role in urging someone to succumb to an eating disorder. Someone who struggles with anorexia nervosa usually has a hard time putting weight back on as well. They tend to count the calories in their meals and limit themselves to a certain amount of calories per day. Victims of anorexia nervosa also pair their extreme diet with an excessive workout plan. Although we see this illness present in today's world it has been around for a number of centuries. “Historians and psychologists have found evidence of people displaying symptoms of anorexia for hundreds or thousands of years.” (NEDA, 2016) For one to be diagnosed with anorexia nervosa there are different criteria that must be met such as: the victim regulates calorie intake in hopes to lessen body weight, the victim, even though they are underweight, has an irrational fear of being fat or weight gain, the victim refuses to acknowledge or denies the presence of the illness in their life. Even if one does not meet this criteria it does not mean that one is not suffering from abnormal eating habits. (NEDA, 2016) Anorexia nervosa can be treated by the victim attending therapy, medications and by seeing specialist. Often times when one is suffering from this illness they must seek medical attention to restore a normal, healthy
