According to The Renfrew Center Foundation for Eating Disorders (2003), “Eating Disorders affect up to 24 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide.” There are many serious eating disorders that are prevalent within one’s community. Some of these eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Many of the eating disorders have become very widespread due to different social media sites and advertisements. The media sites and advertisements that are frequently recognized within many communities, are promoting beauty to be seen as young and skinny. This has a large influence on many individuals who are on these social media sites, inducing them to starve or binge eat to try to accomplish these unreachable …show more content…
“Like many others around me, I am perpetually connected to people and information through a series of devices and social media channels.” (Boyd, 2014, p.74). The best thing about using different social media sites is that this movement can reach to a wide range of individuals because people of all ages are always on some type of social media site. However, each social media site contributes to the Pro-Recovery Movement in a different way. The main difference between Instagram and other social media sites such as Twitter is the fact that Instagram primarily focuses on posting images. These images are used to visually convey a meaning to the audience scrolling through their news feed. This differs from Twitter for the reason that Twitter focuses on thoughts and feelings that are expressed through a limited amount of word characters. The Pro-Recovery Movement uses Twitter in a different light in that it helps to spread positivity through simple words and phrases. This social media site focuses more on the emotional side of an individual rather than the physical aspect of a person because an individual cannot visually see what the person on the other side of the tweet looks like. Another influential site that differs from Instagram and Twitter is Facebook. Facebook is a wonderful site that is used for the Pro-Recovery Movement. This site is a great way to spread awareness because individuals are allowed to share links, post photos, and have the ability to write longer messages to their audiences. Facebook also allows for pages to be made that people can like and then follow on their news feed. The only problem with the two social media sites of Facebook and Twitter is that they are not reaching the greater population of individuals who have eating disorders as avidly as a site like Instagram. “Facebook isn 't the only social network apparently turning off
