What one chooses to believe as disability and what a true disability really means sometimes is a person’s interpretation. We all live in to today’s society where many try to get something for nothing while there are many others struggling with a hand to mouth existence living a world meant for those without disabilities. The difficulties for a person with a real disability to receive assistance from the government as compared to those who don’t really need it receive benefits is a struggle some people deal with on a daily basis. The process of receiving is a long difficult road for one to travel for someone who in desperate need of assistance from the government. Applying for disability benefits need to be the same across the board for all those who apply instead of placing stipulations for some and not for others. Disability is defined as according to the 1954 social security amendment “inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or to be of long-continued and indefinite duration.” (Federal Register, Volume75).The disability program dates back to instatement of the early 1920s (Federal Register, Volume 79). Many debates arose from who qualified for disability and who didn’t which in turn created the many stipulations in the approval for disability benefits.
