The Equality Act of 2010 states you should never be discriminated because of any of the above possibilities. The Act, however, does not protect against non-disabled persons. Most times the disabled people are either assumed to be lying for government assistance or are considered lazy. A common stereotype is that people with disabilities deserve pity, per www.atlascorps.org. People with disabilities are no different than anyone else, their lives may be different and they must live differently but they are human and deserve respect. Such as when an older person goes to the doctor for something that involves them having troubles sleeping or them falling and being told, “What do you expect?”. Even though it doesn’t seem harmful or hurtful to say that it probably is. As people age we sympathize with them more because they are getting older and weaker, so saying things like “what do you expect” or “it is just because you are getting old” does not help how they are feeling on the inside. The attitude that is “What do you expect?” often comes from the people such as their family and the doctors that care for them. By others having an ageist attitude, it is hurtful to the elderly because it makes them feel like because they are getting older they are less valuable.
