Even though it doesn’t seem harmful or hurtful to say that it probably is. As people age we sympathize with them more because they are getting older and weaker, so saying things like “what do you expect” or “it is just because you are getting old” does not help how they are feeling on the inside. The attitude that is “What do you expect?” often comes from the people such as their family and the doctors that care for them. By others having an ageist attitude, it is hurtful to the elderly because it makes them feel like because they are getting older they are less valuable. Many of us have watched or heard of the show The Office with Steve Carell portraying the manager of a paper company named Dunder Mifflin. The show is known for its dark humor, and in my example, this is no exception. In this episode, Michael Scott is warned by one of the personnel at Dunder Mifflin that the company is changing, and that if he does not do something they are going to get rid of the older staffs to get younger and “better” employees. So Michael decides to have a meeting with the personnel to teach them that “Ageism is illegal.” To prove this he invites one of the company’s founders who is eighty-seven years old, and instead of accomplishing his goal he ends up tumbling in what we would call negative stereotypes about older adults.…

Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

It’s disheartening to read and watch media coverages about certain minority groups being the targets of discrimination due to their race, nationality, gender, and religion. Mass media plays a huge role in determining what issues are important and how we should think and act on fixing the issue, yet. it is only effective for a short period. In other words, people tend to ignore big social issues after the media stops covering it due to us being ignorant about the scale of the problem. “Persons with disabilities are stared at, whispered about, even laughed at. People shout at them, talk down to them, or - what is even worse - ignore them” (Gilda Berger 5). People with physical disabilities are looked at differently than the rest of the population.
