The idea of culture is an important aspect of how society runs itself. Cultures enforce moral codes and belief systems that can bring people together or break them apart. Although culture is necessary there are certain cultures that are more harmful to society than beneficial. One of which is rape culture, the ideology that women are to blame for the harm caused against them is broadcasted and enforced into the minds of everyday citizens. In order to understand the different tools used within society to enforce certain moral beliefs I studied the critics of cultural by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser,Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, and Jurgen Habermas.
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels believed that the ruling class purposely created cultural ideas that would help reinforce their social dominance. Because the ruling classes are capable of controlling the production of and the ruling of physical objects such as churches, homes, schools, factories and so forth they are also able to control the beliefs of the people who reside in or frequent them. These physical objects that people frequent are called material forces because they are literally present and not simply a state of mind or belief. Non-material forces are consist of religions, cultures, organizations, and morals.
