In general there are three different sectors which exist: the private- involving businesses which distribute profits to their owners, the public- which are subject to direct political control, and the not-for-profit sector.
The not-for-profit sector otherwise known as the third sector is present worldwide, consisting of various community organisations that are driven by the human desire to assist others without gaining personal benefits, and bring about social change (Hudson, 2009). Categorised into three aspects, the basis for such organisations include professional and industrial associations, member benefit groups, and charities. Rates of success in terms of service performance and effectiveness too may not be easily defined as the impact of organisational services may vary from case to case (Solidago Foundation, 2004).

Accountability to Stakeholders
Community organisations are consisted of a number of individuals and bodies, including members, service users, funding bodies, individual donors, staff and volunteers. All of whom play a significant role in defining what the community organisation is about, and the future direction it is heading towards (Hudson, 2009). The impact of an organisation’s stakeholders may rise as an issue as they may each have conflicting views of priorities and the ways in which the community organisation should function.

Management Structures
In order to satisfy all stakeholders with different viewpoints, it may be essential for community organisations to develop and establish unique management structures, which act as guidelines for the functionality of the organisation in various circumstances. It can be said that a weakness for community organisations in the third sector is that they tend to develop rather intricate management structures to keep the balance of its stakeholders, thus pertaining positive results.
