Sometimes in trying to please everyone, one ends up pleasing no one; least of all oneself. Throughout the novel “The Kite Runner”, the one-sided relationship between Amir and Hassan is discussed. In their relationship, Hassan would do anything for Amir even “eat dirt” (57), whereas Amir would mainly look after himself. Since Hassan was a ‘Hazara’, his kind were “not pure Afghans” (43). As time progressed, the so called ‘friendship’ between Amir and Hassan worsened as the conditions in their home country, Afghanistan, drew them apart. Amir had to face many conflicts within him.
