The scarcest resource in this scenario is clearly revenue. As the national debt increases, the American dollar continues to lose value by the day. The Huns are remembered for their barbarity, just as the Greek Empire is remembered for its commitment to the importance of philosophy and science. In point of fact, this is what societies are most remembered for. This is the basic mark of civilized people: How well they treat each other. This, to the best of my understanding, is precisely what civility is. The nearest synonym to civility would have to be niceness, or perhaps politeness. When weighed by these standards, the migrant workers profiled in The Harvest constitute a great civilization. They essentially have one core value, the timeless credo of Dumas ' musketeers: All for one, and one for all. They will do whatever is necessary to pull their own weight. Sure, they are kids, and kids aren 't meant to work like that, but they are that committed to the success of their family unit. It is almost easy to forget that this is not always the case, especially in America. Our core values seem somewhat different. All too often, individuals abandon the family ship. Sometimes this even seems practical. If these workers core values were any less resolute, they would surely fragment and try to strike out on their own. For many of them this could mean great success. This success would come at a cost though. For the migrant workers this cost is too high. They would rather fail as a unit than succeed as individuals.
