Early upon the planning stages of writing this paper, I couldn’t help but noticed the similarities between Popular Mechanics (Carver, 28) and “Jim” (Bolano, 42), more specifically the fact that they both had an open ending. I leaped for joy, so to speak, when I realized that I could easily fuse these two stories together. With the addition of “Jim” to my story, this proved to be quite the challenge, therefore I opted out of Carver’s minimalist style to better combine the two stories together, consequently, what is lost is the simplicity of the narrative to make the justification or rather the combination of both Jim and Popular Mechanics work.
