Comparing Dystopia In Anthem And The Village

Technology is Power “Dystopia: a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding” ( A dystopia is the exact opposite of a utopia. A dystopian novel describes a world that tries to be a utopia, but somehow fails. Many novels and films are dystopian, including the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, and the film The Village directed by M.Night Shyamalan. Anthem describes a society that lives without technology, and the council, or governing body, wants to maintain control over the people, and with advanced technology it is harder to keep them under their control. Similarly in the film The Village the elders of the society use the same technique to keep its citizens under their control by keeping …show more content…
They discover it is wrong when their leaders deny new technologies. For example, in the novella Anthem, after Equality shows his light bulb he realizes the council does not want it to be shown to anyone else. The council states it should never be seem and Equality is upset by that, because he wants to show it to all his brothers to help them. Soon after, Equality runs away from the society because he knows the council wants to have all the power over the people, with no advanced technology. It states, “We seized our box, we shoved them aside, and we ran to the window... We swung our fist through the windowpane, and we leapt out in a ringing rain of glass.” He took his device and ran to the uncharted forest. In the film The Village, instead of Lucius traveling into the towns it was Ivy, and she left because the boy she loved was injured and needed the new advanced medicine. She realized the town needed the new medicine, and that how they are living is not exactly the best way to live. Ivy is told that the monsters are not real and she does not take the information very good. In fact, she screams and cries until her father is able to calm her down. The Council of Elders primarily chose Ivy to leave and not Lucius because she is blind, and she will not know what the towns are like. She only knows that a man gave her medicine and was kind to her. The new medicine made Ivy grateful that she could help her future
