Critically appraise the relevance of theory for clinical social work practice in Botswana and the African context
INTRODUCTION
According to Dorfman (2013) Clinical social work practice is the professional application of social work theory and methods to the treatment and prevention of psychosocial dysfunction disability or impairment including emotional and mental disorders. Clinical Social workers are concerned with the mental, psychological functioning, emotions and the behavior of individuals and families. These theories are criticized for focusing on the individual as an entity but not other important aspects such as culture and the environment. (Brandell J. R., 2013)Supports this when saying psychoanalysis as a theoretical system is not sufficiently to the clients environment surround. In addition behavioral theories are criticized for not addressing the biological and psychological processes.
RELEVANCE OF THEORIES FOR CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE IN BOTSWANA AND AFRICA CONTEXT
Below are some of the theories for clinical social work and their relevance in the context of Botswana.I will be discussing their relevance from a positive perspective. This is to say even though these theories are criticized I believe they are important, and also they are relevant in Botswana and Africa.

These theories help social workers to explain why certain behaviors are performed. In Africa some children imitate the unacceptable behavior from their parents for example a child may use vulgar language when talking to people because their parents use it when talking to them. As a result through the guide of observable conditioning, social workers are able to explain to the families about that problematic behavior.They are able to teach families to behave in an acceptable manner when they are with their children.The operant conditioning theory also is significant, most families in Africa and Botswana reward their children for the good behaviors and these helps the child to continue with that behavior and they punish children with bad behavior as a way of stopping
