The purpose of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) passed by Congress in 1990 was to reduce air pollution through extensive regulation of industrial and consumer driven auto emissions and to develop new modes of clean energy production. The Clean Air Act was designed to protect human health and the environment from the effects of air pollution.
The Act regulates auto emissions and emissions cannot exceed legal limits. Leaded gas was replaced entirely by unleaded gas. Factories are also mandated to reduce pollutant emissions.
The law provided a framework for developing alternative clean fuels by setting standards in the fleet program and California pilot program. The law promotes use of low sulfur coal and natural …show more content…
The Act was to reduce ambient and source specific air pollution, such as from factories and automobiles. The Clean Air Act of 1970 granted real power to the federal government instead of the states. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was to set the standards and to focus on major polluting chemicals. Auto emissions were to be reduced by 90%. The 1970 Act required states to enforce the Clean Air Act. The Clean Air Act was amended in 1977 and last amended in 1990. It addressed issues like acid rain, toxic pollutants and ozone layer depletion. Massive decreases in gas emissions were mandatory to control acid rain, more regulations regarding toxic …show more content…
A report by AMA reported that auto emissions reduction saved 11,700 lives between 1968-1998.
Many Americans were subject to unhealthy levels of either ozone or particle pollution,
And experienced a number of health problems, including asthma attacks, chest pain and even
Death. Breathing particle pollution year-round can shorten life by one to three years. People
And manufacturerers were main participants. Air pollution has been minimized to a great extent and Americans now have much cleaner air to breathe preventing hundreds of thousands of cases of serious illness, while people are living longer as a result. PH levels are down, Leading cause of air pollution in the U.S. is motor vehicles. Ozone, or smog is an irritating invisible gas that is formed most often by a reaction of sunlight and vapors emitted when fuel is burned by cars, trucks, factories, power plants, etc. Ozone reacts chemically (oxidizes) with internal body tissues that it comes in contact with, such as the lungs. It irritates the respiratory tract
That can lead to asthma, chest pain and even death. The ALA American Lung Association
