When the word reached west about the civil war, he immediately packed up and moved back east to try to a position in the union army. While the record does not indicate how he got an interview with the commanding General Winfield Scott he did it. As for Scott, he liked young men who had some fighting spirit behind them and Baker was the man for that job. As his first job, he was supposed to go behind enemy lines as a spy and try to get as much information as possible. While he failed three times at this job, he never quit and got the job done. He was given countless another jobs such as spying and gathering information about the south military. Where he again was captured and even interrogated by Jefferson Davis, but was cleared of all charges and escaped to the Potomac river where he gained the trust of the conferedy military by faking to be a landowner.
