Qualities that good leaders should have are courage, trustworthiness, and wisdom. Odysseus in the Odyssey and Samuel, Saul, and David in the Books of Samuel, all display these characteristics. Most people think that a leader is supposed to be perfect and have no flaws but that is not true. Odysseus, Samuel, Saul and David all had their own faults while leading but they still managed to lead victoriously.
The first quality that a good leader should have is courage. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one or it is someone who has strength in the face of pain or grief. In the book The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus is faced with a lot of obstacles while trying to get back to his …show more content…
Odysseus first showed courage when he and his men had been captured by the Cyclopes Polyphemus. Polyphemus had seen the men trying to sneak around his home and instead of running them off, he decided to keep them for his dinner. Odysseus and most of his crew were able to make their escape by intoxicating the monster and spearing his eye with a red-hot staff. Samuel, from the Book of 1 Samuel, was a prophet of the Lord and the leader of Israel. He ruled until he had become elderly, making the Israelites demand for a new king. This displeased Samuel so he turned to God and courageously told the people exactly what the Lord had said. He told the people that their next king will take almost everything that they own from them, leaving them to cry out to the Lord for relief but the Lord will not answer. David, in 1 Samuel 17:32-51, had courageously taken up the chance to fight the giant Philistine, Goliath, who challenged King Saul and his men. He went up against him in the name of the Lord Almighty, as well as with some stone and a sling. David struck down the Philistine with one blow to the head from the stone. Trustworthy is when someone is able to be relied on as honest or truthful. Samuel the prophet was able to always speak the truth, even in difficult situations. In 1 Samuel 13:8-14, Saul made a burnt offering for the Lord, against God's word, and Samuel rebuked him, telling him he was to be replaced by someone after the Lord's own heart. In the beginning of Saul's ruling, he had a change of heart and the spirit of the Lord was with him. This made him trustworthy because he was being led by God, telling people the truth and doing what the Lord required him to do. David was trusted by a lot of people, except for Saul, who was jealous of him and wanted to end his life. Jonathan, Saul's son and David's best friend, trusted David with all of his heart, loving him as much as he loved himself. Samuel put his trust in David when he anointed him king over all of Israel. Odysseus, however, was not trustworthy at all. The Achaeans sailed to the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds, who gave Odysseus a bag containing all the winds. He never told the crew what was in the bag, so the curious shipmates opened it, traveling them back to Aeolus, who refused to help them. He lied to the Phaecians and the people of Ithaca, telling them he was someone he
