One of the natural hazards include prolonged droughts. This kills entire season 's worth of crops and can dry out water for the people. Another issue is that they have an active volcano the volcano formed Marion Island in the Prince Edward Islands, which last erupted in 2004, is South Africa 's only active volcano. Another environmental issue is, pollution of rivers from agricultural runoff and urban discharge. Volcanoes affect the MDG because if it erupts there is potential for houses to burnt down which forces people into poverty. This can also burn down crops which makes some farmers poor and people hungry. The rivers being polluted also affect the MDG, when the rivers get polluted some people will not have water to drink. They tried to keep a system based on segregation because there was a white majority. In 1990 the government attempted to stop black oppression by uplifting a ban on people being in the african national congress, and releasing Nelson mandela, a key person for that group. The African national congress was a movement that was against the segregated form of government. Nelson Mandela was an important person, he was put in prison because he led a sabotage attack against the government and was caught. After that attempt In 1990 the government had an election in 1994 where the people would get to vote whether the African national congress will be in power or not. The African national congress would elect Nelson mandela as their first president, he was in office until 1999 and died december eighth 2013.
