People everyday are getting diagnosed with cancer, and likewise, many people are searching for the cure to the many types of cancer in the world. There is no set cure for cancer yet, but every day there is a continuous effort to find more ways to cure the deadly disease that claims the life of many. In a statistic from The National Cancer Institute, it is said that, “In 2016, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 595,690 people will die from the disease”. One type of common cancer in women specifically is breast cancer. In this paper, I will explain the types of breast cancer, what the causes are, what treatments are available, and how we can prevent breast cancer in the future. Firstly, there are three common types of breast cancer: ductal carcinoma, invasive breast cancer, and inflammatory breast cancer (“Cancer Types”). The most common type of breast cancer overall is ductal carcinoma. It begins in the ducts of the breasts where milk is carried to the nipple, and it is classified as “non-invasive” because it has not spread to the surrounding breast tissue (“DCIS - Ductal Carcinoma In Situ,” 2015). Ductal carcinoma does not happen to be life-threatening, but the chance of getting an invasive type of breast cancer later on. It is also more likely to reappear “within the 5 to 10 years after initial diagnosis”, though “the chances of a recurrence are under 30%” (“DCIS - Ductal Carcinoma In Situ,” 2015).
