My reason for having this type of group is that often times the victim is blamed and there’s often times shunning in the community because you or a relative who works in the sex industry are considered lower caste. There’s also stigmas where you can’t explain your situation because you’re a lower caste, families defending the rapist, or even because it’s looked down upon to be a sex worker and those are some common reasons for people not believing those who get sexually assaulted. In the South Asian community, it’s not common to get outside help because family is supposed to be the one to help but rather they feel that it’s often times deserved because they don’t know their worth. Going to the doctors is one thing, but going to therapy is considered to be a taboo. Many dislike going to therapy because they feel like westerners wouldn’t relate to them and even in India most people often pray numerous times for a cure or some even disown the person as well . Also,the dances can be used as skits and these skits can be used to spread awareness to other people in the country and outside of the country. Since there are other similar programs, I believe I would get agency approval because there’s programs that express emotions and feelings and this will be fun for all the girls. It fits into the mission because it’s empowering the girls by being themselves and not what they’re raised into. I don’t anticipate any barriers however, I do feel like this will help everyone. The resources I need is an empty room, some desks and chairs, waters, light refreshments, computer and speakers. Also, I would want the group to be more interpersonal and have different group members lead and make dances and skits as well so that develops leadership skills.
I would prepare the first group by showcasing different Bollywood films and have the girls work in teams and come up with dances to different Bollywood music. I would do this as an icebreaker and to show the girls we can all have fun and then eventually show the girls how to be strong and independent by building up leadership skills by picking a girl each week to run their own group. This will help with insecurity and low self-esteem and also, I believe that it will help create a bond between the
