Most movies involving conflict between good and evil often include murder. In most cases murder is considered one of the worst acts a person can commit; however, many of society’s favorite heroes and popular figures commit murder themselves. So what justifies a murder? Why are some people congratulated for their actions instead while others are condemned? Murder can be considered ethical on the basis of three factors: were they protecting themselves or others, were they upholding the law, and are they trying to show the person mercy.

Law enforcement, as its name suggests, enforces the law. While most infringements end with a simple fine or jail time, there are some cases which require officers to kill the criminal to stop further bloodshed and anarchy. While most officers to try use this as a last resort, it does happen. When it does, the detective or deputy must be prepared to kill a man for the greater good. Then sometimes the force is able to bring a malicious murder in to face justice, where the court may sentence them to the Death Penalty. Law enforcement’s more intensive cousin, the military, works in a similar way. They deal with threats to the nation and its interest, whereas police forces deal with civilian law breakers. Since the Armed forces are typically reserved for war, they tend to experience much more death than their civilian counterpart. However, the general public does not condemn the soldiers for their actions, because they are trying to keep the country safe from foreign threats. In fact, more times than not, the opposing military’s country also realizes the common enemy soldier is simply serving their country; and are not the same as cold-blooded killers. While this unfortunately does sometimes happen, majority of countries have codes of conduct that establish what is and is not considered criminal during these times of war. The Geneva Accords are a perfect example of this: it states what tactics are considered criminal during wartime, and that after wartime ends, those accused of breaking these codes will be brought to justice before the International Criminal Court for their War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity. The Nuremberg and Tokyo Trials after World War II are an example of those hearings. Also, many soldiers suffer from conditions like PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, where they have troubles coping with certain events and their actions during them.
