In “Brownies” ZZ Packer says, “We had all been taught that adulthood was full of sorrow and pain, taxes and bills, dreaded work and dealings with whites, sickness and death” (19). As we grew up from childhood most of our parents sat us down and gave us “that talk.” In that talk they taught us indirectly that when we become adults we will face different types of altercations that we cannot change, but have to deal with. The Atlanta troop made many racist comments towards Troop 909 even though they knew nothing about them, except they were white. For example, when the Atlanta Troop first met Troop 909 they said the white girls “Smell like Chihuahuas. Wet Chihuahuas” (2). That comment reflects back to “dealings with …show more content…
As younger children get around their friends, they try to pressure each other to do things and say certain things to provoke arguments or fights. That is just what Arnetta did to Daphne. Arnetta pretended to hear a girl in Troop 909 call Daphne a nigger (5). Moments later when the other Troop Atlanta girls met Arnetta half way to the bathroom Arnetta said, “Man, I completely heard that girl…Right, Daphne” (6). Arnetta was pressuring Daphne to lie like one of the white girls called her a “nigger”. Even though Arnetta knew she did not hear anyone call Daphne a “nigger”, she wanted that to be the reason Troop Atlanta could “kick the asses of each and every girl in Brownie Troop 909” (1). That is what they wanted to do from the beginning so Arnetta made it her business to find or create a reason to fight them. Another example of peer pressure is when Arnetta leaned over and told Snot, “No Snot. If we get in trouble, you’re going to get in trouble with the rest of us” (21). Arnetta made her go to the restroom with them even though she wanted to wait until Mrs. Hedy go …show more content…
Just as in "Brownies", Troop Atlanta suffered from those three factors. For example, Arnetta pressured Daphne to lie like a girl from Troop 909 called her a "nigger" (6). Furthermore, Troop Atlanta did not have much exposure to white people, so that also played a big part of the girls being racist towards Troop 909. Lastly, children about their ages hear or see certain things from their parents and they learn to do them. For example, Daphne start to clean when the other girls made her mad. Arnetta and the other girls learned negative things from their parents and the people around
