Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City. It is located between Queens and Long Island. I have only been to Brooklyn once before I got my second year field placement. To me, it is a mysterious and unknown place. Therefore, when I first step on this borough this semester, I felt unsafe due to its totally difference style compared to Manhattan. The site of our agencies is located at East New York, Brooklyn. When I went outside of the subway station early in the morning, there is no tall building, and there are few people on the street. In addition, Brooklyn has the highest number of Natural Increase. Slightly more than half of the Brooklyn population is female (52.6%). Currently, approximately two-thirds (64.6%) of Brooklyn’s population are working age adults, aged 18-64; approximately one quarter (23.3%) are children aged 0-17. Residents age 65 and older comprise 12.1% of Brooklyn's population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). The number and percentage of the older are increasing. According to the report of Berger (2011), the percentage of persons 65 year and over is 11.5%.
The ethnicity is extraordinarily diverse in Brooklyn. Nearly 19.5% of Brooklyn’s population is Hispanic or Latino, 35.8% is Non-Hispanic White, 35.2% is Non-Hispanic AA, and more than 12.1% is Non-Hispanic Asian (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Compare to the data of 2011, the total population of Brooklyn is increasing. The percentage of Hispanic and Latino, Non-Hispanic White, and Non-Hispanic AA has decrease, while the percentage of Non-Hispanic Asian has increase for around 2%.
The life expectancy of persons in Brooklyn is 77.7 years (DOHMH, 2015), while for people living with serious mental illnesses, life expectancy is 25 years
