Breast cancer affects about 1 in 8 women in the US, as of 2014, but has been decreasing (American Cancer Society 2014). Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the breast tissue and can spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The risk factors for breast cancer include gender, ethnicity, and genetic background. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer, but men can get it as well (American Cancer Society 2014). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining due to the increase in screening and awareness (American Cancer Society 2014). However, the screening is not beneficial for women under the age of 50 as we saw in the film The Emperor of all Maladies. Siddharta Mukherjee. In recent years, incidence rates of breast cancer have been stable in Caucasian women, but have increased slightly in African-American women (American Cancer Society 2014). In addition, Caucasian women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than African-American women are, but African-American women are more likely to die of this form of cancer, according to the latest data from American Cancer Society. However, in women under 45 years of age, breast cancer is more common in African-American women. Therefore there is concern for Caucasian population when it comes to life insurance since more of them are likely to develop breast cancer; however, it is also equally high risk for African-American women since they are…
