Bread Givers The story that I read is called Bread Givers is a novel written by Anzia Yezierska in 1925 and is about a 10- year old girl named Sara Smolinsky. Anzia Yezierska was born between 1880 and 1885. Her father was a Talmudic scholar, and her family lived on the money her mother made from goods. Anzia’s family immigrated to New York City around 1890. Anzia has 8 siblings that live with her. Her brother Meyer changed his name to Max Meyer. Anzia became Hattie Mayer. Anzia published her first story in 1915 and began receiving recognition in 1919. She also published her first novel Salome of the Tenements in 1923. She died in 1990 The narrator Sara lives in a tenement in the Lower East Side of New York City with her Jewish orthodox father Reb, her mother Shenah, and her three older sisters Bessie, Fania, and Mashah. The Smolinsky family Sara’s father devotes his time to the study of the Torah and refuses to help with the family’s income. Reb believes that women should not worship God and that only men should give all their attention to the Torah. …show more content…
The family is struggling to pay their rent to the landlord. There is a confrontation between the collector lady, the landlord, and Reb. The collector lady insults Reb to pay the rent of the past few months while he is singing. Reb tries to explain that he does not have the money to pay for the rent. The collector lady gets angry and slams the Torah shut and causing the book to fall at her feet. Reb becomes angry and slaps the collector lady twice causing her to call the police and arresting him and putting him on trial. Reb’s short of absence forces Sara to sell herling on Hester St. as a form of income for the family. After Reb comes home, the community admires him for hitting the collector
