After working in the French Creek Watershed I began to hike around the lakes and streams. This means by having cleaner streams I would personally benefit from aesthetically pleasing clean streams. Even on a short weekend walk behind the cemetery I would pick up any bottles or small objects I saw I felt an obligation to give back to the area I was able to enjoy. I also understood it was vital to keep the area clean so it would stay enjoyably and inhabited by the animals I always hope to see. It is shown that people will spend more time hiking in clean areas and bring an economic benefit to the area (Loomis et al., 2000).…
Project Title: Winchelsea Common Nature Reserve The Winchelsea Common Nature Reserve is situated on the corners of Gladman Street, Hopkin and Witcombe Street Winchelsea. It is in joint ownership with the Surf Coast Shire and DELWP. Legislation affecting this site are the Crown land (Reserves) Act 1972 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 ( Federal Act) Flora and Fauna guarantee Act 1988 (VIC). It is in the Bioregion of the Victorian Volcanic Plain, the catchment area is Corangamite, and the EVC is 55 Plain Grassy Woodlands.…

In “Quitting Coal: A Health Benefit Equivalent to Quitting Tobacco, Alcohol, and Fast-Food”, Jonathan Patz focuses on how the break of utilizing fossil fuels (mainly coal) compares to everyone in the world eating healthier, stop using tobacco, and remaining sober. He states that making healthier options for our planet will not only affect the wellbeing of Earth but humans as well. Expressing that the upsurge in carbon dioxide particles in our atmosphere; he provides ways that we could regulate that issue for our health. Patz records the productive impact that his solutions have made on principle Australian cities. His findings will help provide evidence for the solution of climate change; and what small changes citizens can do to help.…
In Iona Creek Reserve, weeds were located around the grassy area. This is a major issue, not just because weeds are an invasive and fast growing species, but also because there are endangered plants located on the site. The Blue Gum High Forest is the main endangered species on the site. This forest sheltered the Sydney region before European settlement, and is now limited to small bushland along a small range of suburbs in Sydney. The Blue Gum Forest is one of six main indigenous communities of Sydney and listed as critically endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), and an endangered ecological community in NSW under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 .…
Earth and Environmental Science Environmental Impact Statement By Byron Smith Actual Development “Hume Coal Mine “ In the Berrima area located in the NSW southern highlands there has been a proposed coal mine. This coal mine will consist of large stockpile near Berrima (town centre), train loading facilities, a train line and an underground mine. The Hume coal mine is too “extract 3.5 million tonnes of coal… in the next 19 years”.…
Yosemite National Park, located in the central eastern portion of California, has been founded since 1890. The park is known for its natural habitats and abstract scenery. Tourist enjoy hiking in Tuolumne Meadows, lodging in Yosemite Valley, fishing in the Eastern Sierra and even skiing in the Mammoth Lakes mountain resort. But what any do not know is that all of these attractions were created by one phenomenon, glaciation.…
“Australia needs to do more to address environmental concerns.” Discuss. It is obvious that the Australian nation needs to further correct the adverse state of the environment. From global warming to resource depletion it is clear that the Earth has been severely damaged by human actions and Australia is no exception to this. Looking at our planet today, it is evident that whatever the world leaders are doing currently is not enough.…
Pollution has made significant impacts on the Great Barrier Reef and its struggle for survival. The tourist population is an uncontrolled figure , if we were to restrict this figure, we would not have enough money to keep it in operation. So if we arent going to restrict this figure i think we should train this figure into how to respect the reef and not pollute ect. To backup my above statement i have put together 3 ways that we can protect and restore our treasured Reef. 1.…
The author mentions some arguments provided by power companies to persuade the government not to increase and set new regulations for handling and storing coal ash. The lecturer, however, refutes the reasoning and believes that they are not convincing. First, according to the reading, there are numerous restrictions for power companies. For this reason, it seems that there is not any urgent need to set enact new rules.…
Through going up in Green Bay and De Pere, Wisconsin, there has always been a topic that has continuously appeared and disappeared. That is the condition of the Fox River, throughout my childhood I was never able to fully use the river to swim or fish within. That is because of the dangerously high levels of pollution that are within the water. The river has been found to have 209 chemicals found in a study by Sharon A. Fitzgerald and Jeffrey J. Steuer. Throughout my studies, I have found great effort to restore the river to the conditions it had been before the comings of the paper mills.…
Introduction: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR), one of the world’s most precious marine ecosystems, has been deteriorating due to poor water quality (Kroon et al., 2016). One of the main reasons for this substantial decline in water quality over recent decades is agricultural runoff of nitrogen, pesticides/ herbicides and sediment (Figure 1). In fact, the water quality is most affected in the inshore areas in the southern and central regions near the most intensive agriculture. The impacts are biophysical in their effects on the marine animal and plants of the Reef. For example, coral cover declined about 50 percent from 1985-2013 (Brodie et al., 2013, p.2).…
The Sydney Tar Ponds were a hazardous waste site on the Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. During the early 1900s, steel production began at this location and carried on for over 80 years. Throughout this duration of time, at least 700 000 tonnes of toxic by-products were produced due to smelting and steel production processes. Some of the by-products produced were total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, xylene (BTEX), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals. The toxic by-products were dumped into a tidal estuary that empties into the Sydney Harbour which ultimately lead to the toxins being released into the Atlantic Ocean.…
Human impact in the Region: The human impact upon Numinbah Valley has come from two main things, Farming and Tourism. Farming has impacted the environment at Numinbah Valley because farmers have been cutting down trees among the riverbanks and depleting the last remaining way for the soil to not get washed away with the current. Also, farming also produces waste and chemicals which also enter our water, polluting it. This then creates less pristine or foggy water for the lower parts of the river and more work for the Gold Coast City Council.…
Furthermore, the safety issues that arise from strip mining and mountaintop-removal are incredibly serious, and the lack of government regulation seems to help keep these safety concerns and health issues from seeing any kind of reconciliation. Acid rain and acid mine runoff, has caused a dangerously high level of mercury to be present in Kentucky streams. Pregnant women who eat fish from said streams risk causing serious, lifelong harm to the child. Of the 113 tons of mercury produced each year in the U.S. 48 tons comes from coal fired power plants. In Kentucky, the number of children treated for asthma has risen almost 50 percent since 2000 (Reece, 2007 p 25).…
