When Lou Ann interviews Taylor as a possible roommate they quickly realize that they are more alike than they thought. “We had already established that our hometowns in Kentucky that were separated by only two counties”(75). Both of them decided to create a new lives for themselves and find a new home. Even though they are now no longer in Kentucky when they realized that they were from the same place they still got along immediately. This proves that you always have some of your past inside of you. Because they are from the same place they get along very well so they decide to live together. Taylor and Lou Ann live together as single parents and they come up with schedules to take care of the kids they have a family like relationship. “Lou Ann reading magazines for child raising tips.. and me coming home grouchy after a hard day's work. We were like some family on a TV commercial”(88). The two of them have figured out a system for their lives. When Mattie first meets Taylor she gives her the job of fixing tires but then they become close and Taylor learns about Mattie’s other job and Taylor offers to help knowing how dangerous it can be. “She reached down and gave me a hug, and I actually started crying”(198). When Mattie gives Taylor a hug it shows how close they are and how much Mattie cares about her. Similarly, Taylor “actually started crying” illustrates the connection between the two of them and how close they are and how their friendship has grown since they first met. When on their journey Taylor comes up with an idea that she needs Esperanza and Estefan’s help with so: “Later that night I asked Esperanza and Estevan if they would be willing to do one more thing with me. For me, really. I explained that it was a favor, a very big one”(222). Later on in the novel, we learn that the favor was to help Taylor legally adopt Turtle. This shows Taylo’rs attempt to start her new biological family.
