Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21st, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany. Bach’s musical talent was no surprise due to the great reputation the Bach family held for their musical talents; learning to play violin and the harpsichord from his father and organ from his famous uncle. Bach considered one of the best composers of all time, you may recognize a few of his most popular compositions such as “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” and “Mass in B Minor”. Before becoming a freelance musician Bach held a number of positions. He served as a court musician for Duke Johann Ernst in Weimar and Duke Wilhelm Ernst also in Weimer, musician for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen, and also organist and teacher at St. Thomas church (Sartorius).

BWV 659 is a great example of an ornamented chorale prelude. It highlights an ornamented soprano line which maintains out the melody of the chorale melody and the pedal line moves in steady eighth-notes which is also known as bass continuo.
The text of Nun komm der Heiden Heiland is a translation from Martin Luther’s Ambrose’s advent hymn Veni redemptor gentium (Lee, 28). The text from this chorale first appeared in Erfurt, Germany in 1524. “This hymn was most popular because it was the hymn for the first Sunday of the four Advent Sundays from around 1600, given both in Latin and German in several Leipzig hymn books. The text is a song of praise, the Lutheran doxology expressing gratitude for the journey of Christ from God the Father, to human form, to his descent into hell, and finally back to God the Father” (Lee,
