Everyone knows what a man is, but not everyone knows what it really means to be a good man. The type of man everyone knows is the typical society man, the superficial one. Nobody understands what it takes to be a good man and not being able to demonstrate it all the time. Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner demonstrates what a good man is when describing the main character Amir, how he makes mistakes but throughout his experiences he begins to mature enough that he decides to stand up for himself and learns that nothing is perfect and the only way to deal with it is to live with it, which leads to being a honorable man.

Honorable men have flaws, they as human beings make mistakes. Hosseini makes the main character Amir imperfect. On chapter 7 page 77, “I could step into that alley and stand up for Hassan- the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the past- and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end I ran.” Here Amir shows that he is scared not necesarrily a coward but when people read this for the first time they eventually come up to the conclusion that he is indeed a coward. Me as a reader and a person, understand what led him into making this decision, this is the first instinct that everyone would have and probably end up doing, he is just a 13 year old boy, he is still not mature enough to make these life changing decisions. However on the other hand the author makes Amir selfish during his childhood. On page 56 “I was going to win, and I was going to run that last kite. Then I’d bring it home and show it to Baba. Show him once in for all that his son was worthy.” I believe that selfish is not the correct word but he is too harsh on himself, because later on Amir says “And maybe, just maybe, I would finally be pardoned for killing my mother.” All these years he the reason for his mother’s death, just because she died giving birth to him.
