The Cultural Revolution in China was a major event in Chinese history. This event was a sociopolitical movement that occurred in China for ten years. This event had a goal of preserving true Communist Ideology. This revolution was led by Mao Zedong. During the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards were created to eliminate anybody who rivaled against Mao Zedong. Anyone who revolted during this revolution was persecuted by means of public humiliation. Other ways of punishment included imprisonment, hard labor, harassment, seizing of property, torture, and in the worst of cases even execution (Cultural Revolution). Bei Dao lived in China during this period and he created and underground magazine with Mang Ke called Jintian. This magazine was banned in 1980 because of the controversial content inside of the magazine. The Cultural Revolution and the events during the revolution greatly influenced Bei Dao’s
