The battle of Hastings happened in 1066. The battle was between King Harold II and William the Conqueror. King Harold II was put as king of England when his close friend Edward the Confessor died as king without leaving an heir. But it turned out that William the Duke of Normandy in France was a distance cousin of Edward which made him eligible by blood to be king. The two men went into battle against each other to fight for the throne. William marched with his troops of 6,000 men and fought Harold. William wasn't doing so good in the beginning so he made his troops retreated into the woods. Thinking that William was giving up, Harold made his army go after them. Until, a new group of Arabs finally decided that that nobody was going to be allowed to visit so they closed it off to all Jewish and Christian pilgrims. This caused the pope to call for a crusade. A crusade is a voluntary army who have a goal. The very first crusade, also known as the Peasants Crusade, was in 1095, and the goal of the crusade was reclaim the holy land in Jerusalem from the Muslims. Pope Urban II sent armies of Christians from Webster Europe on the trip to reclaim the holy land. In 1099 the Christians claimed the holy land. This victory only lasted for about 50 years, the Arabs retook control of Jerusalem. There was then another Crusade known as the Nobles Crusade. This crusade lasted from 1147-1149 and was an unsuccessful. The crusaders unsuccessful took back Jerusalem. About 40 years later there was a third crusade known as the Kings Crusade. They crusaders decided instead of attacking Jerusalem they would attack the city Constantinople. They stole goods, money, paintings, jewelry, anything that had value. High up people got kid napped and were held for ransom it was very violent. There were about three more Crusades after this one. Some were successful and others were not
