Religion in the Middle Ages had a huge impact on people’s lives and medieval Europe. People would do many things because of their religion! Some ways that religion affected people’s daily lives were the Crusades happening, people devoting their entire lives to the church, and the church having power over kings.
One way how religion affected medieval life was that many people fought in the Crusades. According to Document 6, Christians would go on pilgrimages to visit holy sites. They would travel long distances and go to holy sites. But, according to Document 5, the Turks and Arabs had taken over Jerusalem, a very holy site. The Crusades were a war over Jerusalem between Christians with the Byzantines and the Turks with the Arabs. Pope Urban II commanded Christians to fight for the land so they could go to the many holy sites there. These people were called monks if they were men or nuns if they were women. The rest of their life would be devoted to prayer and service. They attended eight church services a day! They could not own land and had to follow their leaders. According to Document 4, if you were a knight you had to follow rules too! You had to believe and follow the church's teaching, defend the church, respect weaknesses, love your country, don’t recoil from your enemies, make war against the Infidel without mercy, perform your duties, never lie, be generous, and always be good!
