It was surprising to read that no drug is addictive; instead, drug addictions only develop from chemical and emotional vulnerability due to past life experiences. All my life I have been told that drugs are highly addictive; but after reading this essay, I now know that addiction relates to the type of person consuming the drug. This essay taught me to not judge anyone who may have a drug addiction. I cannot stereotype these people about the type of past they have lived. Instead, I must understand that these people have issues with their past that they need to deal with to conquer their addiction.…
Craig Nakken is a family therapist and addictions counsellor at the Family Therapy Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota. He describes the addictive personality as "the most important idea expressed in this book". Nakken believes that some people are more prone to addiction than others. He examines various causes of this including influences in childhood. He does not rule out agenetic element saying that, "In all likelihood, it will be found to be a combination of the two" (environmental and genetic influences).…
I have a sister who dealt with substance abuse problems and it affected her relationship with our family. Drugs just don’t affect the person who’s abusing them, it affects the people who surround them. In this paper I plan to consider five aspects of substance abuse. These aspects are how can someone…
RECOMMENDATIONS: Mrs. Cunningham has been addicted to heroin for at least 20 years. In developing an appropriate plan of treatment for Rosa Lee, the writer utilizes the integrated model of addiction and must consider several factors over the course of her lifespan (Jenkins, n. d.). According to Glenn, Johnson and Raine (2013), substance use is a complicated issue to disentangle. Research suggests that genetic and environmental factors contribute to the possibility of antisocial personality and substance use disorders (Glenn, Johnson & Raine, 2013).…
Individuals take drugs for some reasons: alleviation of stress, expanded vitality, to unwind, to mitigate agony, to escape reality, to feel more self-regard, and for diversion. The impacts of being a drug abuser can affect many people: on the person, on the loved ones, and on society. Becoming a drug abuser or a drug addict can cause many health issues such as damage to your heart, lungs, stomach, and brain. Drug use can disturb family life and make dangerous examples of codependency, that is, the companion or entire family, out of adoration or dread of outcomes, accidentally empowers the client to keep utilizing drugs by concealing, providing cash, or denying there is an issue. Individuals who utilize drugs encounter a wide cluster of physical, mental, and emotional impacts that could change their life…
Briefly describe and critically evaluate one or more models of addictive behaviour. Models of addictive behaviour aim to explain the initiation, maintenance and relapse of addictive behaviour. The Biological Model and The Cognitive Model are two that aim to do this. The biological model describes addiction as being a disease and enforces the idea that the addiction can’t be reversed even with treatment.…
A plethora of factors that contribute to the development of substance abuse, physiological, chemical, and mental and emotionally are some of the factors to assess when examining the topic of substance abuse. This paper examines one dynamic responsible for substance abuse in individuals; nature vs nurture is a quandary that has challenged the addiction theorists. This paper will explore the nurture aspect responsible for developing addiction. Additionally, this paper will delve into the causes and effects of substance abuse on individuals and the perpetuation of the dysfunctional cycle. Born into Dysfunction Children born to an addicted mother are likely to be born with Fetal…

I will mainly focus on past research about impact of genes on substance abuse since children of parents who are substance abusers will inherit the genes of their parents. Regardless of the importance of genes, inevitably, there are other triggering external factors that lead to substance abuse like peer pressure, culture, and the structure of the family in which individuals are raised, along with the role of maltreatment. Other ways to explain addiction include social learning theory and past traumas, like sexual abuse during childhood. On the other hand, parental support can prevent individuals from abusing substances. Hence, along with the biological level of analysis, sociocultural level of analysis will also be used to determine the extent of influence of biological factors.…
The Biological, Social and Cognitive Aspects of Drug Use and Addiction Numerous studies have been conducted on the three foundational aspects of human motivation in regard to drug use and addiction. While each of the three aspects have their own results, they tie into each other overall. A study from Bechara & Damasio (2002) indicated substance dependent individuals develop a propensity to become antisocial.…
"Most likely, substance abuse and dependence result from a combination of factors, including biochemical, genetic, familial, environmental, and cultural ones, as well as personality dynamics" (Straussner, 2013, p.14).…
George L. Engel, a psychiatrist at the University of Rochester came up with the Biopsychosocial Model of Addiction (Fisher 2009). From the biopsychosocial model, we understand that addiction is a “complex disease” (Howatt 2005). It may be influenced by either biological, social or psychological…

How one interprets or react to their surrounding connection can determine the severity of addiction. The “psycho” or rather psychological part of the bio/psycho/social model take into consideration psychodynamic forces, learning, motivation, interpersonal interactions and one’s personality towards addiction abuse (Doweiko, 2015). During this process personality plays a major role in environment interaction, future interactions and the biochemical interaction of the brain. The theories of psychological addiction brings biological and social components all together. Within the psychological department of addiction morals, learning, coping, and personality defense shapes the impact of addiction.…
It is difficult to collect data on individuals using harmful substances in a concurrent manner (Schneider, Ottoni, Carvalho, Elisabetsky, Lara 2014). There are many sub-categories that go beyond merely observing traits and substance use. Therefore, it can be difficult to identify a correlation between the two. Further research can provide a better understanding of how personality is associated with substance…
