Anorexia nervosa (also known as anorexia or anorexic) is an eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disorder categorized by abnormal patterns of eating behavior and disturbances in attitudes and perceptions toward weight and shape. Anorexia Nervosa is one of the most universally known and yet least recognized eating disorders. By definition, anorexia is an extreme fear of weight gain regardless of increasing emaciation. Anorexia nervosa, however, is quite severe. Anorexia is a psychological illness, which affects both men and women within normal weight ranges who think they are overweight.
Even though other people see them as thin or skin-and-bone, it is very difficult for them to see this. People with anorexia typically weigh 15% or more below the estimated weight for their age, sex, and height. Like they say our body mass index (BMI) is calculated by our weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of our height (in meters).
Once it comes to Anorexia nervosa there are no gender differences between the disorders. The foundation of the illness often follows some traumatic life events that have occurred in the person’s life. Low self-esteem is often the cause of these stresses. Anorexia nervosa is a potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterized by a lack of self-esteem, an intense fear of becoming obese and self-induced starvation due to a distorted body image (Durham, 1991).
