Annex The Philippines

The U.S. should not annex the Philippines because the Philippine people are very experienced in speaking their own language and also having their own currency which means that they are capable of self ruling. For economic reasons like doing agriculture for a living and making some money off of that income that is why the U.S. should not annex the Philippines as well. The Philippine government was already sturdy and running perfectly fine before the U.S. colonized the Philippines and they were making the right decisions that would benefit their country. should not have annexed the Philippines is because the United States justification for annexing the Philippines for political reasons, because they wanted a military base there. Americans wanted free market access to the Philippines, and we did not want non-white Filipinos to have a say in American national government. The U.S. wanted to give ourselves an advantage by running the Philippine markets. We had a Philippine commission that would be deciding American government rule in the Philippines. If the U.S. annexed the Philippines then the U.S. Philippine commission would make all the decisions for how the Philippine government was set up. The Philippine citizens would have no representation for what we would decide. We decided to take over and Emilio Aguinaldo started defending the Philippines against American invasion but he was unsuccessful. In 1899 we sent 65,000 troops to the Philippines to try and take over. We marched over to the Philippines using 65,000 troops and invaded their land with success. Since Emilio Aguinaldo was a Rebellion leader and he tried to defend the Philippines against American invasion the Americans thought of him as their enemy so they negotiated that the resistance would never be defeated until Aguinaldo was killed or captured. Dr Jacob Gould Schurman was the first president of the Philippine commission in the year 1899. He was for annexation for economic reasons. America having a naval base in the Philippines not only gives strategic in the region but also gives money for military buildup. By being assigned the role of president he was entrusted to examine the situation in the Philippines and compose endorsement on how the U.S. should advance after the sovereignty of the Philippines was relinquished to the U.S. by Spain. This demonstrates that it was the U.S. plan all along to inessence own the Philippines which means anything on the land of value the U.S. could simply take and use. The U.S. wants a powerful navy like Britain so that they would have protection from invaders. Thayer Mahan’s thesis “ a great nation must expand commerce through foreign trade”. Mahan strongly believed that the U.S. economy would instantly be inadequate to consume the enormous amount of industrial and commercial goods being produced domestically.
