In Chinese culture there are many traditions and variations of traditions in the culture. Lin’s grandmother likes to stick to the traditions she grew up with. The grandmother starts getting sick when Lin starts to stray from the culture. This is symbolism for the fact that the culture and traditions for Lin are dying. When Lin’s parents find her in the driveway with Todd and they are very upset; when Lin comes inside her dad is filled with rage and hits her. Lin is trying to grow up and experience life however, he parents are not letting her grow up with out them monitoring her every move. Her parents and grandmother who are telling her to stick with the traditions of the Chinese culture are suffocating her. Lin is also naive and following her heart. She is in love with Todd and is excited because it is her first love. She doesn’t want to hide it from her parents yet; she has to because they disapprove. The fact that her parents are forcing her into the culture and making her participate even if she doesn’t want to it makes Lin not want to be a apart of it at all. No teenager likes to be made to do something or participate in something they dislike. So when Lin’s parents get mad and her or make her stick with her traditions it makes her want to leave the traditions even more. Lin just wants to be her own person and live a life she will be happy to
