Friendship, newly minted
Shiny new penny, bright.
My spirit danced on grateful feet
While she played Bach with abandon.
Hopeful unearthing of shared joys,
Literature, music, and nature.
Russet haired sisters singing
Her alto uniting my soprano, two halves Of a whole.
Long summer, sweltering, boardwalk wanderings
Through towering cattails and fragrant marsh mallow,
Counting deer, baby owls and dying carp.
Conversation, rich, deep calling to deep.
Her cup half empty, dark with depression;
“Everyone leaves,” she murmured.
Hope overflowing, my cup half full;
“I will be different,” I whispered,
And I vowed.
Angry outbursts like sudden summer storms,
Raining vitriol and scorn.
Mouth held bitter,
“My anger is a thing
