In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Christopher Columbus discovered the new world in his voyages, but by accident. The reason for Columbus’s voyage was to find an alternate trade route to the Spice Islands And at this time the passage required Spain to go through the Mediterranean Sea. The sea, however, was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and required a hefty toll. For this reason, Columbus did “not go eastward by land in the usual manner but by the western way” (Doc 1).…
Before Columbus sailed, in Spain in 1492, there was a climax in the war between the religions and the christians won. This lead to Isabella making religion more important to the Spaniards. The Spaniards went to the Americas to overcome more land. When the Spaniards reached the Americas the Indigenous people and Spaniards would have babies together and the children that had an Indigenous mother and Spanish father would be called mixed and were more likely to be orphans. In 1512 a leader in Spain became a priest to help Isabella bring Catholicism.…
Justin Fernandez Mr. Miraya Honors U.S. History 10, 4A 26 August 2016 “America Before Columbus” Response The ancient native american city of Cahokia was unknown to me prior to reading this article. What surprised me while reading was the fact that their leader “Great Sun” was a tyrannical leader when I initially thought that most indian tribes had councils or elder in charge.…
When Columbus first set out on his journey, his goal was India, but unexpectedly, he landed in the Americas. The Spaniards believed that they were superior to the Natives. Christianity was the religion they grew up believing. The Europeans believed the practice of other religions was erroneous, and when they saw human sacrifices, it only solidified their belief that the Natives must be cleansed. The Spanish only saw them as a tool to use in their own favor.…
October 12th, the day many associate with parades or just another day off which was appointed for one specific individual: the Italian-Spanish-serving-explorer, Christopher Columbus. Children across the nation are taught the classical rhyme of “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”, without being also informed of the domino effect unleashed after the famed “discoverer” had stepped onto the sands of the New World. The historical events Christopher Columbus created should not be portrayed from Spanish explorers as traditionally taught, but a commoner’s views. Despite the little of a bias, there were commoners who did not necessarily perceive Columbus’s actions to be morally correct and justified. All facts would therefore be presented and…
1. Describe and explain how slavery affected the economic, social, and political development of the South during the first half of the nineteenth century. Why did Slavery become the essential difference between the North and the South? What are the long-term effects of slavery?…
Cook, David Born to Die: Disease and New World Conquest, 1492-1650. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 1998. In this book, David Cook attempts to synthesize all available information about the spread of disease in the new world in one volume. Cook’s main argument is that the traditional historiography on the subject, most notably that written by Bartolome de Las Casas, over-emphasizes the cruelty of the Spanish as the reason behind the massive deaths experienced in Amerindian populations.…
Judith A. Carney’s article, “African Rice in the Columbian Exchange” published in 2001 in the Journal of African History, discusses the fundamental role of Africans in shaping the New World through their knowledge of rice cultivation and African food crops. Carney wants to demonstrate the other side of the Columbian Exchange that gets overlooked by other studies and show how Africans are agents in shaping the New World, and that behind this labor force of slavery there is a skilled African with full knowledge of agricultural techniques for rice. This neglect is surprising given the fact that Europeans took African crops as provisions for slave ships that took course to the New World. Thus, Carney wants to credit Africans for their contribution…
Introduction The Age of Exploration saw many great explorers, discovering new lands and making riches as they went. Juan Ponce de Leon was one of these explorers. Ponce de Leon is best known for his discovery of the south-east coast of what would eventually become Florida, in the United States. Early years and career Ponce de Leon was born in 1460, in Santervás de Campos, Spain. Although he was born into a noble family, he was very poor and like many others in his situation, he dreamed of wealth and glory.…
1. Sugar was very important to the people at this time and changed everyday life completely due to its economic and dietary importance. Throughout the years’ sugar became cheaper and available to people in the middle class as well as poor people, because of its availability the symbol of sugar declined or power. “As for sugar, it was transformed from a luxury of kings into kingly luxury of commoners-a purchased luxury that could be detached from one status and transferred in use to another” (Mintz, 96). This quote explains how sugar became useful to everyone because there were large quantities of it.…
In an article he says what Columbus had done was worse than Hitler. In the Tainos perspective they saw Columbus as a dangerous, selfish, and powerful man. When Columbus first arrived in the Bahamas he described the population to be gentle and generosity of heart. What possess a man to kill, rape, and take advantage of these poor people? Columbus had wiped out a majority of the Native Taino population and as a result of his discoveries at the new world he paid his dues and was arrested and eventually killed.…
Thesis: Christopher Columbus was a man responsible for the decimation of three major civilizations, as well as the ultimate genocide of the indigenous peoples as a whole, one of the largest in human history. Columbus alone committed an array of horrific acts, using the Indians as sex slaves and extorting them for labor, stealing their land and goods, and hunting them for sport and dog food. His choices and treatment influenced how other would later view and deal with the Indians, eventually leading to their near extinction. Most of us know very little about the people who roamed our lands before we “discovered them”, and instead praise one man’s inaccurate claims. and that is why we should replace Columbus Day, which credits a man for deeds…

The exploration and colonization boom of the 16th-17th centuries permanently connected Europe and the Americas, a connection that eventually formed the modern “West.” This new global connection not only created positive effects, but it also created a few negative ones as well. The European and American perspectives vastly changed because of this new connection that was created. Before the connection came to be, Europeans believed there were multiple continents, unaware of how big the world truly was. The Europeans believed that new trade routes, adventures, and the spread of religion could be a good aspect to come out of exploring the world, but it was also dangerous, unknown, and time-consuming.…
