1.) During the introduction of the story, Holden 's tone is sarcastic and foreshadows the use of tone to be implemented throughout the rest of the story. When Holden introduced his parents, he stated, "but they 're also touchy as hell. Besides, I 'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything" (3). Salinger uses word choice and common slang to exhibit the mood of Holden Caulfield. Salinger 's diction is illustrated using words like, "hell" and "goddam." J.D. 2.) After Holden was expelled from school, Mr. Spencer, Holden 's history teacher, spent time with Holden and discussed teaching from the previous semester. Holden, who first looked to Mr. Spencer as somewhat of a fatherly figure, claims, "I flunked you in history because you knew absolutely nothing" (15). After Holden first introduced these harsh phrases to Mr. Spencer, their relationship began to fall apart after Mr. Spencer irritated Holden for reading his previous essays.
