Color vs. Society In the short story “Desiree’s Baby”, the author, Kate Chopin expresses how a simple color of someone, can change everyone’s whole perspective of an individual. In Chopin’s story, she starts the short story off, involving a happy family, and then later on, she uses color of skin, marriage, and family to show how important each of them can impact his or her daily lives in an instant (Chopin 73-77). A theme of “Desiree’s Baby” is a person’s color, including an infant, will determine on how he or she thinks of that individual. Another theme that is associated with color is, to not discriminate against him or her, because of his or her color. Chopin’s theme of “Desiree’s Baby” allows the reader’s to feel and form an opinion of Chopin’s short story, because of how inspiring it is. The short story starts off by saying, “As the day was pleasant, Madame Valmonde drove over to L’Abri to see Desiree and the baby (73).” The moment Madame Valmonde (Desiree’s mother) arrived; she fell in love with the baby (73). There was no reason for her not to dislike it, until the next time she decided to arrive. A few weeks later, she visits Desiree’s baby again, and she screams “This is not the baby!” (74). It had everything to do with the color of the baby. Afterwards the baby’s parents, Desiree and Armand, had got into an argument, which almost lead to a divorce, because they both were blaming each other for the child’s color (75).
