Life Changing Events “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that can describe this book written by Rachel Hawkins. The book “Hex Hall” by Rachel Hawkins has the paranormal romance genre. There are many events and accomplishments that form a person. Sophie Mercer is a young witch who grows throughout the story. She grows within culture, community and family. Some of the events that make Sophie mature throughout the story are choosing what is right over family, meeting new people and not trying to show off. Sophie learns to choose to do what is correct over family. Sophie used to follow her family traditions because that was the way she was raised. A quote that shows this is “Her eyes glowed bright as a furnace because we’re family.” (Hawkins 311). In the beginning, Sophie followed her Grandmother Alice because Alice said that they were family. Then later on she realized that just because Alice was related to her did not necessarily mean she was correct. This caused Sophie to question her beliefs and from this experience she learned to trust her own judgment to decide which choices are right. Sophie also left Alice’s when she found out her grandmother was hurting her friends. Sophie learned her lesson when she saw her friends die right in front of her.
