Doraemon written by cartoonist Hiroshi Fujimoto writing under the pen name Fujiko F. Fujio, is a successful Japanese manga series. It is considered as a Japanese cultural icon and is popular around the world, especially in Asia. Doraemon is well known in many ways such as manga, television series, films, video games, or even musical and translated into 9 languages. The first Doraemon in manga version was launched in December 1969. Forty-five volumes of the Doraemon comic series had been published in December 1999. It is one of the best-selling manga in the world, having sold over 100 million copies. Doraemon has also become an international celebrity, particularly in Asia. Doraemon television series are broadcast in many countries such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, etc. Beyond that, he has played an important role in economic growth. As an image, he takes root and function in large scale in Asia market increasingly. The Doraemon merchandise is always receptive and attentive not only in Japan. It has explosive success in Asia. He is also considered as an ambassador of Japan to improve poor relations with neighbor countries in East Asia: China and South Korea which some people viewed Japanese negatively.
