According to American Literature, a hero can be defined as someone who is selfless, and courageous. In One who flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest selflessness is shown by McMurphy when he stands up for the other men in the ward.Courageousness is shown in the story The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because Huck had helped a runaway slave to freedom. These examples are seen throughout the stories read this semester. Selflessness; you think less about yourself, and more about others. One of the first examples of selflessness and courage takes place in the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo 's Nest written by Ken Kesey. Ken Kesey is an author who worked in a mental hospital for some time and wrote a novel about it. The characters in the book all take place after actual people he met in the ward except for a few. McMurphy was very selfless in some parts of the novel. He took the men on a fishing trip to help them learn that the ward is not the only thing in the world. When they got back, the black boys, who help the nurse, took all the men into the showers to get the ¨bugs¨ off. They were spraying a weird kind of liquid on the men and one of them, George. is a germaphobe and was freaking out. In order to help him, and get the black boys to leave him alone, McMurphy had fought back, ¨Washington¨, McMurphy said.
