Niccole Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an aristocrat whose fortunes wavered according to the shifts in power in Florence.219 He was suspected of a crime against the state and imprisoned.219 Even though he was not guilty. He had to support himself as a writer instead of continuing his career in civil service.219 He believes in being brief and to the point in his writing. Machiavelli is less poetic and more pragmatic than Lao-tzu.220 In this article he uses rogerian strategies because he gave an opinion and was trying to prove it right by explaining it with further examples. In the article “The Qualities of the Prince”, Machiavelli describes the way a prince should act in a certain situation and what qualities does a prince have to have to be a better prince. He describes a prince duty concerning military matters, whether it is better to be loved than to be feared or the contrary, and avoiding being despised and hated. He used aphorism as an another rhetorical weapon. An aphorism is a same that a concise statement of a principle has been accepted as a true. A prince who doesn’t understand military matters… cannot be esteemed by his own soldiers, nor can he trust them. Machiavelli explains duty to the prince’s concerning military matters because a prince should know how to command a military, how to make instead decisions during wars.
