Lynchings were turning into a famous method for settling a portion of the outrage that whites had in connection to the free blacks. From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings happened in the United States. Of these individuals that were lynched 3,446 were African American. The blacks lynched represented 72.7% of the general population lynched. This photo appealed to pathos because black women, men, and children were killed by lynch mobs. Racism in America is very recurrent in today’s time. In fact, racial governmental issues remains a noteworthy wonder, and prejudice keeps on being reflected in financial inequality. So from an African American’s point of view, this would be a picture describing the hate that they received. This picture is known to upset many people mostly because it is told to resemble “hatred”. It brings out a lot of past emotions and for some African Americans, these emotions are still current. Viewers can see a KKK member hanging from the rope over water deep in the woods. The woods in photos often symbolize the oblivious and it’s filled with secrets. The woods is where slaves practiced their secret religions. It was a place where they could feel free and it was the place where slaves would go through when they tried to escape. The water in this photo symbolizes for cleansing and when slaves tried to escape they would get in the water because it cleansed their scent. It alluded to the song wade in the water which secretly told the slaves to get off the trail and into the water to ensure the canines slave catchers utilized couldn't sniff out their trail.
