Joyas Voladoras/Don 't Jump I thought that both essays were very informative and got their point across in a different and unique way. Between the two I thought that Joyas Voladoras was the better of the two essays. I liked how the intro got to the point right away and basically told me that the essay was going to be about hummingbirds and animals. The way that the information was given in this story was subtlest. I didn’t know that I was reading facts because I was really into the story. He added the information in with the story and so by doing this it didn’t feel like I was reading facts off a spreadsheet even though looking and analyzing this essay most of it really is facts. One way that I thought he was able to do that was adding descriptive words with the facts such as when he said “Their hearts are stripped to the skin for the war against gravity and inertia, the mad search for food, the insane idea of flight.” This is a giant fact that could easily by boring and unnecessary but the descriptive tone and words used makes this work. I thought this was a very important tool to have because otherwise it would make this piece sound like one big information dump where the reader gets easily bored and puts it down. Having said this, I was left feeling empty at the end of this. I had no idea what the purpose of writing this was or what was ambitious about it.
