Today in society many of us tend to do whatever it takes to fit in and keep our true selves locked in. In the memoir entitled The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls experiences a lot of obstacles due to the frequent moving. She often faces trouble with making new friends and having others to fully understand her. At some point one tends to get tired of others not understanding so they hide their past along with their true personality just to fit in. In my cousins experience she once faced the same thing. She had often found herself trying to fit in because she was often judged by the way she looked or the way she acted around people. My cousin not only had trouble fitting in, but she also faced the difficulty of finding her true self. Struggling to fit in is not only an issue one faces, but it is an issue that causes people to become a person they are not. …show more content…
Just like Jeannette Walls often lied about her past to fit in, my cousin as well hid her feelings to not feel like an outcast. They both encountered the struggle of bullying. My cousin and Jeannette were both frequently bullied for the way they dressed and for the way they acted around people. For example, a difference between Jeannette and my cousin would be that Jeannette Walls had the courage to stand up to her bully, but in my cousins experience she was scared and therefore often blamed herself. Jeannette Walls states that “she wanted to let the world know that no one had a perfect life, that even the people who seemed to have it all had their secrets” (Walls 270). Truth is both Jeannette and my cousin went through hard struggles throughout their childhood and adulthood, but they both overcame them as time passed. If they learned anything it was definitely that everyone goes through things one never wish to encounter, but that one experience can always shape the person you become in the
