How would you feel waking up everyday to a society that assumes your personality based off of your wealthiness, your physical appearance and even who your friends are. In the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, she brings up a big problem in the world that is often ignored, or not seen a major problem in society that needs to be noticed. She presents the concept that when people stereotype others based off of their looks, appearances, and from they way they act, conflicts begin to evolve amongst each other. Conflicts begin to happen, because society begins to create personalities for people without even getting to know them, or their background.

She is also telling Ponyboy that he has a mind of his own, and he does not have to live up to the expectations of the Greasers just to fit in. When Ponyboy mentioned in the beginning of the book that, “Nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do,” (Hinton, 2) he is showing how not all Greasers are the same. Ponyboy is a smart kid, but since the Greasers are also seen as dumb, Ponyboy tries to hide his differences in order to fit in with his peers.
Society sees the Greasers as dumb, poor, and cruel kids, but S.E. Hinton is showing that judging people just based off of their living circumstances and the way they dress does not really show the personality of that person. Everybody is different in their own way, and not all people act the same way as their peers.
