“We have a problem in this country, and it’s Muslims.” These were the words of a member of the audience in Donald Trump’s rally in Rochester, New Hampshire. The man continues by saying, "You know our current president is one. You know he 's not even an American." Trump’s lack of response to the audience member sparked outrage throughout the country. Many politicians and celebrities stepped out to show their disappointment towards Trump, saying that Obama was a Christian, and not a Muslim as Trump and his followers have accused him of being more than once over the years. Critics labeled the audience member a bigot. Unfortunately, the man was not alone with his mentality. Recent CNN/ORC polls found 29% of Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, including 43% of Republicans.

Although it is clear as to what the problem is, if seen in a different light, this story takes a turn for a more Islamophobic route. The obvious antagonists of this news story are Donald Trump and the unnamed man making the racist accusations against Muslims and President Obama. The protagonists on the surface seem like all the people who have taken outrage by the whole scenario. Unfortunately, in this specific story, the people who took massive offense by Obama being called a Muslim were also antagonists. The reason for this is that everyone seems to be treating the word “Muslim” like it is synonymous with something extremely negative (such as: Terrorist). The larger issue in the…
